Seen From the Street: Five October Moves, Starting With the Window
The first weekend of October is when decorating stops being a Pinterest board and becomes a to-do list. The search numbers show it. “Halloween window art” is up 500% month over month, “halloween door ideas” 400%, “mums front porch” 400% and “fall centerpieces for table” 300%. The strangest number is “shelf wallpaper”, which is up 4,500% in a single week. What all of these have in common is that they are cheap, quick, and visible. So this is not a shopping list for a whole room. It is five small moves, in the order someone sees them: the window from the street, the bookcase inside, the mantel, the table and, last, the porch steps.
The window, and the one move you can see from the road. If you only do one Halloween thing, do the window, because it is the only decoration that works from the sidewalk and from the sofa. These are four large sheets of ghost stickers, each ghost about three feet tall: one leaning on a broom, one holding a black cat, one carrying a jack-o’-lantern and one with a candle, with bats and stars to fill the glass between them. They cling to the window without glue, so there is nothing to scrape off in November. Space the ghosts across different panes so they look like they are walking along the glass, and leave a lamp on at dusk so the white glows from outside. 4.7 stars from 386.
The bookcase, and the cheapest custom look there is. “Shelf wallpaper” is the search of the week, and the idea is simple: line the back panel of an ordinary bookcase with peel-and-stick wallpaper and every shelf looks built-in. This one is a black ground with large roses in cream, peach and deep red, which is the kind of dark floral that “cozy fall wallpapers” is really asking for. A single roll is 17.5 inches wide and 118 inches long, so one roll covers a standard bookcase back, with a faint seam you only see if you look for it. Then keep the shelves loose: books both upright and flat, a pair of brass candlesticks, one pumpkin, one shelf left half empty so the roses show. 4.7 stars from 485.
The mantel, and a cauldron that is actually made of iron. Most Halloween cauldrons are plastic and look it. This one is cast iron: matte black with a pitted casting texture, a tree of life on the front, a band of triple moons under the rim, three little legs and a steel handle. The openwork pentagram lid lifts off. It is about 6 inches tall with the handle up, and the 4-inch opening takes a pillar candle, a bunch of dried flowers or a sage bundle. On a wooden mantel beside two black tapers and a few small pumpkins it is the one object that makes a room look like it has a witch in it. 4.8 stars from 149.
The table, and a centerpiece that is not flowers. “Fall centerpieces for table” keeps climbing, and the easiest answer is a bowl you already own. Coil this 39-inch strand of orange and cream wood beads in a wooden dough bowl, let the two jute tassels hang over the edge, and set two small pumpkins in the loops. It also drapes over a candlestick or a tiered tray, and when Thanksgiving comes you can leave it where it is and just add the napkins. It costs less than a latte. 4.8 stars from 820.
The porch steps, and mums that will not go brown. Real mums cost about $15 a pot and look tired by November, which is probably why “mums front porch” and “fall front porch 2026” are both climbing. These are twelve faux stems made for outdoors, each 13.8 inches tall with 35 small orange flowers and green leaves, with stems you can bend and flowers you can remove. They are not pom-pom chrysanthemums, so do not expect to match a garden-centre mum, but pushed into a woven basket they fill it in five minutes and keep the same colour until you put them away. Put one basket on the second step, a smaller one by the door and two pumpkins at the foot. 4.7 stars from 590.
None of this takes a free Saturday. Stick the ghosts, cut the wallpaper, set the cauldron, coil the beads, fill the basket, and by Sunday evening the house reads as October from the street, from the sofa and from the front step.
