Four Days to Back-to-School: A Drop Zone, Two Dorm Walls, and a Porch That Already Turned

Pinterest is unusually easy to read this week. Three of the five fastest-climbing home searches are about somebody leaving the house — backpack station at home, up 600% in a month; luxury dorm room, up 500%; college cork board ideas, up 300%. The other two are about the house itself turning over: fall porch decorating, up 800%, and dark whimsical bedrooms, up 300% on the month and 90% on the year.

That is mid-August in one screenshot. Term starts in four days, and the season starts about ten minutes after that.

The backpack pile is the most solvable problem on the list. Every family with a school-age kid has the same three feet of floor by the front door, and every “drop zone” pin is really one piece of hardware: a 29-inch rustic rack with a floating shelf on top and five heavy black double hooks underneath. The shelf takes keys, mail and a small plant; the hooks are mounted low enough that a seven-year-old can hang their own bag, which is the entire difference between a system that works and one that gets ignored by Wednesday.
